The Gateway Mummers have performed for family audiences at theatres, village halls, festivals and art centers in the United States, The Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland and Scotland.
The earliest account of an Irish Mummer group is mention of a performance given for the King of Ulster in 500 B.C. - making this type of folk drama one of the oldest western theatre forms in continuous existence. The Gateway Mummers continue this ancient tradition with comical, magical plays written and directed by Sandra Hughes.
In Ireland mummer plays are usually presented at mid-winter between December 26th (Wren Day) and January 6th (Twelfth Night). In earlier times performances were also given at other seasonal turning points in the year.
